  • Fasoracetam

Fasoracetam is most popular among university students and professionals that seek mind boosting properties over a certain amount of time, especially to increase focus and attention or as an addition to a fitness training plan. In this fast moving world people more are dependent on well functioning cognitive capabilities in their jobs or at university. Having a balanced diet and eating sufficient vitamins helps to improve overall health undoubtedly but it has its limits. This is where supplementation comes in handy.

Fasoracetam was originally developed by a Japanese pharmaceutical company for the treatment of vascular dementia which is a brain condition caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain resulting in troubles with thinking processes such as reasoning, planning, judgment or memory. The clinical trials went through to phase 3 when researchers found it was not as efficient as desired to treat vascular dementia. The fact that in these clinical trials, they were trying to improve thinking processes on individuals whos thinking was impaired, suggests that Fasoracetam can noticeably increase thinking in healthy individuals.

The development of Fasoracetam is somewhat interesting. Scientists at a children's hospital in Philadelphia (USA) have seen its potential in the treatment of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Eventually the head scientist of the hospital, Hakon Hakonarson has started a company to try and bring Fasoracetam forward in the market. Another pharmaceutical company then purchased Hakonarson’s company and carried out clinical trials on adolescence with ADHD in 2014 [1][2].

Although no studies with humans exist in this context, many report that Fasoracetam alleviates social anxiety and/or depression in a way unlike other racetams where similar effects are felt, but causing unpleasant nervousness.

How does Fasoracetam work?

Fasoracetam was found to modulate some of the glutamate receptors in the brain. Glutamate is one of the most prominent neurotransmitters in the brain responsible for cognitive functions such as neural communication, memory and learning. A study on rats concluded that Fasoracetam was also able to upregulate GABAB (metabotropic) receptors [3] which influence muscle relaxants and are effective for the treatment of anxiety, depression, epilepsy or cognitive disorders [4]. Besides mentioned effectiveness, Fasoracetam is cholinergic and enables the brain to take up more choline. Choline is a nutrient that plays an important part in liver function, brain development, nerve communication, muscle movement or regulating energy and metabolism. Additional choline that is taken up by the body through eating healthy foods produce acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter related to learning, memory formation and cognitive functions.

Effects

  • Improved memory
  • Improved learning
  • Improved cognitive functions
  • Alleviates anxiety & depression
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Improved mood
  • Metabolism (in combination with sufficient choline)

Dosage

Generally Fasoracetam should be taken in small doses of 10mg per intake. Some will suggest to take 50 to 100mg per day but it is not recommended as long term effects on the brain are not known yet and Fasoracetam is already effective with much lower doses. Doses between 10mg and 20mg per day should not be exceeded.

Stacking

Fasoracetam is well stackable with supplements that are rich in choline. This combination tunes its overall effects and balances out increased choline uptake caused by Fasoracetam. CDP Choline or Choline Bitartrate are two well tolerated choline supplements.

Side effects

Fasoracetam is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are similar to those of other members of the racetam family to which count headache, stomach or digestive distress and temporary fatigue.

Attention

Pregnant or nursing woman should not take Fasoracetam. Long term effects of Fasoracetam are unknown. Always consult a medical practitioner prior researching this compound. Do not exceed generally recommended doses. This compound is for research purposes only.
